When I joined the Communications team, prolonged inconsistent use had created a gap between the City's approved identity and what was being produced. Different colors, fonts, logos, and design styles had made their way into everyday communication.

Our team dug through old files and institutional knowledgeuntil we recovered the most recently approved branding.

Recover & Understand

The style guide established the approved logo, colors, and typography but I wanted to understand the intention behind it.From the available documentation, our research and my own analysis of the identity, I read the civic mark, strong sans-serif typography, limited palette, tilted star and bold, rounded geometric forms as creating anidentity that felt approachable and stable without becoming overly rigid.

Boosting Convention Goers

The conceptual company for this project wants to introduce an new energy and health boosting drink for tabletop gamers that attend competitions and conventions. The target audience often plays for prolonged periods of time and are prone to fatigue and in large crowds in danger of succumbing to illness afterwards.

As a member of the target audience, I am aware of common imagery and terminology found within the tabletop community and leveraged this information as a place to begin research and collecting information and subcategorizing the target audience to begin developing a direction for the drinks name, identity, and marketing opportunities.

I determined that the company wanted to be adventurous, fun, and healthy and began work on how elements could be combined to convey those concepts.

Direction Alignment

Researching possible directions for the product, I was able to create 3 variations of the scales the product was trying to attract.

Adventurous competitive gamers.

Fun-loving casual players.

Character-driven cosplayers

‍

I decided to focus on the middle ground which included elements from the other stylescapes due to the visual's ability to showcase adventure and characters, having a semblance of elements often found in health drink packaging, and likely hood of attracting a larger pool of the target audience.

A Sketch of an Idea

With most projects, I tinker to get to the essence of what makes a concept work and experiment with making alterations to push the scales and explore possible paths to continue. I liked the initial concepts of utilizing dice, potion bottles, game symbols, and character class illustrations.

Going Down Possible Paths

Making a solid and concrete connection between the concept of potions and the product being a health and energy-boosting drink I continued down the path of using potion bottles and Alchemy as a troupe often found in games along with the continued exploration of polygon dice shapes. The name was a combination of Alchemy and what is known as a "critical success" in many games. As well as changing the spelling from Alchemy to Alcheme to iterate the critical improvement provided to the consumer. I also utilized common naming conventions for flavors.

I found that in the case of this project the scales could swing wildly and create interesting results but finding the balance between the "Adventurous" and "Healthy" scales was key.
